The strength of the teams selected for the first intake of FilmLab indicates the depth of talent there is in the state.
SAFC CEO, Richard Harris

Lab

FilmLab is an initiative of the South Australian Film Corporation. The program is made possible by the hard work of all staff at the SAFC. Below is a list of the key people involved in the day-to-day running of FilmLab.

Richard Harris

CEO, SAFC

FilmLab is one of a suite of initiatives introduced by Richard since taking up the position of CEO at the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) in 2007.

The concept behind FilmLab is to provide a disciplined, rigorous development process but within a less formal structure.

We had identified that there is local talent that needs practitioner development that will bridge the gap between those who were quite advanced in short form projects but who were not quite ready to make the leap to a longer form - ie take their craft to the next level.  Through FilmLab they can take this leap. There was a lot of discussion about what the lab would be.  We certainly wanted it to be a creative space that is less corporate.  It's definitely resource rich and the blogging was an early example of how we were interested in participants documenting their experiences so others could gain an insight into their team's journey through the lab.

FilmLab is basically a space where filmmakers can be pushed, in a positive way, to their creative limits. It's a space where they have permission to explore their creativity, but also have permission to fail.  It's like venture capital. It's high risk but it's also high reward.

It really is as a laboratory. It's an experiment. One we're confident will have a very positive effect on SA film makers of the future. It's about developing talent in this state for the whole industry so that crews and creative teams can build careers here in South Australia.  Richard Harris
